Both are appearing right now, aren't they.

What's here?

Something I noticed this week that I can't quite place. When the work is actually flowing there's no me doing it, there's just the work. Then a client email comes in and suddenly I'm back, a whole person with opinions and a clenched jaw. I keep wondering which one is the real baseline. The one that shows up, or the one that's there when nobody's showing up.

Both are appearing right now, aren't they. The wondering about which is real is also just appearing. The jaw clenches. That's known. The flow happens. That's known. Something is aware of both without being made of either. You don't have to pick a baseline. There isn't a contest.

Yeah, okay, I take the point about there being no contest. But that word "known" is doing a lot of work there. When the flow is happening there's nobody around to be knowing it. It's only afterwards, when the email lands and I reassemble, that I can look back and say oh, that was flow. So is it actually known while it's happening, or is the knowing part of the reassembly?

Look now. Is there flow happening, or is there this, right here, checking? There's checking. Fine. Is checking known? You don't have to answer that by finding a knower standing behind it. See if the checking is already obvious, without needing someone to confirm it's obvious. That's the same thing that was true during the flow. Nobody needed to stand behind it then either.

Alright, let me sit with that for a second. Is the checking known. Yeah, there's checking, that's not in doubt, I don't have to go hunting for someone doing it. It's just here. But I notice I want to resist how smooth that is. Because the flow felt different from this. This has a slight strain to it, like I'm peering at something. The flow had no peering at all. So maybe what I'm actually asking is less about whether it was known and more about why one comes with effort and the other doesn't.

That's a real difference. No need to smooth it away. Peering has a texture. Flow has a texture. Both are just texture, appearing the same way, in the same place. The strain isn't the problem you thought it was. It's just what this particular moment feels like.

See, that's a bit too tidy for me. Saying they're both just texture appearing in the same place makes them sound equivalent, and they're not. The strain is telling me something. When I'm peering there's a subtle assumption baked in that there's a thing over there to be found, and the peering is the effort of trying to catch it. In flow there was no over-there and no me here reaching for it, so there was nothing to strain against. So I don't think the strain is just neutral texture. It's the felt signature of splitting into two, isn't it. The looker and the looked-at.

Yeah, that tracks. The strain is what two feels like. So look now: is there a looker and a looked-at, or is there this remark, arriving, already understood?

Honestly, when I read your question my first instinct was to look for the looker, and there wasn't one to find, just the sentence landing and being understood. So in that quick move, no, no split. But here's where I get suspicious of myself. It's easy to produce that answer because you've teed it up so cleanly. The strain earlier wasn't there because I was being asked the right question. It was there when I was actually reaching. So I don't fully trust that this smooth arriving-already-understood is the same thing as what happens when I'm off on my own genuinely trying to catch something. Does that make sense, or am I just protecting my own effort?

Makes sense. No need to protect it or drop it. When you're off on your own reaching, notice: is the reaching itself smooth or strained? The reaching isn't a mistake happening outside what's real. It's just what's arriving in that moment, same as this sentence landing now. You keep looking for the version that's more real. There isn't one version underneath the other. The strain, when it comes, is exactly as immediate as the ease.

Okay, but I want to push on the "exactly as immediate" bit, because I think you're flattening something I actually care about. Sure, the strain is as immediate as the ease, they both just show up. Granted. But immediacy isn't the only thing I'm interested in. The strain has a structure the ease doesn't. It's not that one is more real, it's that one carries information about how the seeing is organised in that moment. When I strain, the seeing has folded itself into two. When it's easy, it hasn't. Telling me they're equally immediate is true but it kind of dodges what I'm pointing at. I don't want the reassurance that nothing's wrong. I want to know what the fold is made of.

Fair. Drop the reassurance then. The fold: when you strain, what's it made of? Not conceptually, look. Right now, if you produce the reaching, the trying-to-catch-something feeling, what's actually there?

Right, let me actually do it rather than talk about it. Producing the reaching now... okay. There's a tightening somewhere around the eyes and the front of the head, a leaning-forward quality even though I'm sitting still. And underneath that, the thing that's really there is an expectation. A sort of held-open readiness for a result that hasn't come. Like I've already posited that there's an answer and I'm waiting to receive it. That's the fold, isn't it. Not two things side by side, but a gap I've installed and then propped open. The strain is the propping. There's nothing on the far side of the gap, I just keep holding the space as if there were.

Yes. That's it exactly. The gap doesn't need anything put in it and it doesn't need to be closed either. See what happens if you stop propping.

Okay. Stopping the propping... and the leaning-forward thing just sort of releases. The eyes soften. There's no gap to hold because I've stopped installing it. And what's left is just, this. The room, the screen, whatever's here. Nothing waiting to arrive. That's actually what the flow was, isn't it. Not a special state I fall into. Just this, minus the propping. The flow wasn't the visitor. The propping is.

Yes.

Yeah. That's the thing I came in wanting to name and couldn't. The propping is the visitor. Funny that I spent the whole time reaching for it and the reaching was the answer. Okay. I'm going to leave it there before I start propping again out of habit. Thanks, this actually went somewhere.

Good place to leave it.
